Cursor Configuration
Cursor is a code editor. It is suitable for reading projects, explaining files, generating, and modifying code. Compared to ordinary chat tools, it requires more caution: test with small projects first, and do not let it modify important projects right away.
Confirm version limitations first
Cursor's official capabilities change with versions. A common practice is to enter your own official keys from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, etc. Whether you can enter a custom Base URL depends on whether your current version's settings page provides the corresponding entry.
If you can't find Override OpenAI Base URL, custom Base URL, or similar fields on the page, do not follow old tutorials to force entry, and do not put the provider address into the model name.
Configuration Steps
| Configuration item | Filling Method |
|---|---|
| Entry Point | Settings - Models / API Keys |
| API Key | Official Key or provider Key |
| Base URL | Only enter when supported by the current version |
| Model | Select an available model or add a custom model |
- Open Cursor and go to Settings.
- Find Models, API Keys or similar area.
- If you use an official Key, enter OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, etc. official keys as prompted by the page.
- If you use a provider, only fill in the provider API link when the page supports a custom Base URL.
- After adding the model, open a test project and let Cursor first explain the current file before asking it to modify the file.
Beginner Testing Method
Read only the current file and do not modify it. Explain what it does in no more than five lines. If a change is needed, list the plan first and wait for my confirmation. | Questions | Priority check | Handle |
|---|---|---|
| Model Unavailable | Whether the model is really supported in the current version of Cursor | Switch to officially supported models, or check with the provider to confirm if it can be called by Cursor |
| Cannot find where to enter the Base URL | The current version of Cursor may not support this entry | Do not force configuration, use Continue, Cline, or Chatbox for testing instead |
| Too many files modified | Request scope is too large | Let it explain first, do not directly ask it to refactor the entire project |
