Codex issue troubleshooting
The key focus of Codex troubleshooting is the OpenAI-compatible interface. Generally, troubleshoot in this order: Base URL, Key, model name, whether the current Provider is effective.
What should be confirmed first?
| Check items | How to view | Why |
|---|---|---|
| The provider supports OpenAI-compatible interfaces | The backend can show API address, Base URL, OpenAI compatibility, and other instructions | Codex needs to be able to request the compatible interface |
| Base URL | Copy the API link provided by the provider | Whether needed /v1 Follow the backend example, do not guess yourself |
| Key Status | Key is not disabled, not expired, and account balance is normal | 401 Mostly start by checking the Key |
| Model Name | Copy according to the backend model list | The model name, case, hyphen, or version number will cause failure if written incorrectly |
Common errors
| Phenomenon | Priority check | Solutions |
|---|---|---|
| 401 / Unauthorized | API Key | Regenerate or copy the Key, and confirm that the Key is not disabled, not expired, and the account balance is normal. |
| 404 / model not found | Model Name | Do not write model names based on memory; copy according to the provider's backend model list. If retrieving the model list is supported, get the list first; if it fails, then add manually. |
| Base URL related errors | Is the API link complete | The Base URL is the API link provided by the provider. Is it required /v1 Follow the backend example, do not guess. |
| Request does not go through but the Key is normal | Is the protocol matching | Confirm that the current provider offers an OpenAI compatible interface, not Claude, Gemini, or an interface that only supports web chat. |
| Not effective after using CC-Switch | Target tool selection | Ensure the Provider is applied to Codex, not Claude Code; restart the terminal or client before testing again. |
Minimal test
Test with the shortest question first to confirm the request goes through before handling the real project.
Codex Minimal Test
codex "Please reply only: Codex configuration test successful" Feedback template
When giving feedback to the provider, write like this
Tool: Codex System version: Provider dashboard Base URL: Model ID / model name: Exact error: I have checked: no spaces in the Key / balance is sufficient / model name copied exactly / Base URL copied from the dashboard / terminal reopened
